If you were a long lost child of an extremely wealthy, important governmental official and no one ever told you your true origins, you could spend your entire life living in poverty or illness, lacking the means to provide for yourself. The FACT would exist - that you were heir to abundance - whether or not you KNEW it.

One small thing could make the difference, even between life and death in your situation:

KNOWING.

Therefore My people go into captivity [to their enemies] without knowing it and because they have no knowledge [of God]. And their honorable men [their glory] are famished, and their common people are parched with thirst. Isaiah 5:13 (AMP)

Often the Bible speaks of being hungry and thirsty as an illustration of lacking what is vital: the Word of God. Jesus gave bread and wine as His body and His blood. Jesus is the Word.

So what causes God’s people -- you and me -- to be taken captive? According to the verse above, it is ignorance of the Word of God; a lack of knowledge. So, conversely, if we KNEW God’s Word, we would stay out of captivity, right? We would live and stay free.

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ John 8:31,32 (ESV)

Again we see the illustration of Jesus’ words - words of TRUTH - as being the way to freedom.

In Hosea 4, we see God speaking to His people about their lack of faith, their lack of love, their lack of knowledge of Him and the consequences their evil actions were causing: negative effects on the land and the animals, and this in effect was hurting His beloved people. He blames the priests whom He had appointed to teach His people and keep them safe, the shepherds who were to keep the people in the way of truth.
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. Hosea 4:6 (ESV)

The priests were to keep the people informed of the right way to go, but they had fallen down on the job and the people were paying the price for their ignorance. They were being destroyed “for lack of knowledge”.

God wants us to know the truth. He wants us to be free and enjoy abundance in every good thing. He doesn’t want us in lack, hungry and thirsty, either literally or figuratively. He wants us fed and nourished and knowing the right way to go.

You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy, and at Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore. Ps. 16:11 (AMP)

The truth is, we are the heirs to a great promise: the Holy Spirit. Within us is the answer to every question we will ever ask, the guidance we need to walk victoriously through this world, the fulfillment of every good thing. We must know the power of the One living within us. God wants us to know -- He doesn’t want us destroyed or held captive because of ignorance.

For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness’, and again, ‘The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.’ So let no one boast in men. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future - all are yours, and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s. I Cor. 3:19-22

All things are ours! We probably won’t ever know all of it, but we are to know and be wise in Godly wisdom, understanding Him and His love for us and the freedom He purchased for us with the blood of His precious Son. Ask for and receive the wisdom and truth God wants you to have!

Jesus spoke to His disciples, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven..." Matt. 13:10 (ESV)

What was given to His disciples? TO KNOW.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Prov. 1:7 (ESV)

Ask God for increased knowledge; ask Him to instruct you. The Holy Spirit was sent to counsel and guide us; ask Him to increase your knowledge of Him and Truth.

We have been given everything we will ever need; we have been saved from sin and death and have received the Holy Spirit, the promise fulfilled. Paul says in Galatians 3:14, "... so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.”

So through the Holy Spirit we have received the blessings God promised to Abraham; we become heirs by faith. The Holy Spirit is the answer to every question and we must know what we have in order to walk in freedom and victory daily.

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Phil. 3:8

Paul says that “knowing Christ” as his Lord is worth more than everything else. Knowing.

... that I may know him and the power of his resurrection... Phil. 3:10

Jesus rose from the dead with power and we received the Holy Spirit after Jesus was glorified. Paul sought only to KNOW of this power!

Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 1 Cor. 2:12

Again, Paul has reasoned that the blessings, “the things freely given us by God” are received by understanding!

We must understand and know all that we have, that we might begin to walk in our victory, do good, love others, and bear much good fruit for the kingdom. Jesus spoke of this:

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. John 16:13-15 (ESV)

Jesus told us that all He has has been declared to us, as His disciples. Do you know? Ask! Read! Believe!
