Your words determine the course of your life. Many people have heard Proverbs 18:21 quoted many times and yet still fail to grasp the enormity of it:

Literally, what you say is what you get. Don't let time throw you off; just because it doesn’t happen immediately, don’t get lulled into complacency. Your words, just as the Words of our Maker, in Whose image we were made, are powerful.

In Genesis (1:3-26 Amp.) we see that God created all of heaven and earth, the stars, the people, the animals, all of creation in fact, by speaking:
And God said, Let there be light; and there was light.
And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters...
And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be collected into one place...
And God said, Let the earth put forth vegetation...
And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens...
And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly...
And God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures...
And God said, Let Us make mankind in Our image...
God created everything out of nothing, merely by speaking everything into existence. His words held power and life. And He created us in His image. We have the ability to speak things into existence by faith in God’s word. When we find out what He says and start saying the same thing, we have power and ability to bring goodness into this world. As long as we speak as the world speaks we will only hinder the goodness God has planned and work to build up strongholds for Satan.

Jesus explains more about this principle:
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. (Matt. 12:36,37 ESV)

Some scientists believe that sounds -- words, music, etc. -- never actually fade away and disappear. Just as radio waves are still bouncing around in outer space from shows which aired in the 1950s, so too some believe that using the right equipment, we might one day be able to tune into, and pick up on a receiver the actual words of Abraham Lincoln.

Or my words. Or YOURS.

Satan has tried to make us dis-believe God's Word of Truth. Satan has no truth in him, so it only follows that he would try to convince all of us that truth really doesn’t matter.
Truth is Jesus, though. He said Himself that He is the Way. He is the Truth. He is Life. Do we dare to think He doesn’t mean that His Word is Truth? Do we dare believe our enemy who says truth/Truth doesn’t matter? Anything that sets itself against the truth of God’s word is a lie and lies believed become deceptions. Deceptions become erroneous ways of thinking which become wrong actions.

This is Satan’s plan for all of us... to cause us to believe lies instead of God’s good Truth.
All through the Bible you will find God’s principle of words set forth -- not unlike the principle of gravity or magnetism -- that what you speak comes into being, whether for good or evil.

I’m not asking you to believe in some sort of psychological phenomenon or the power of positive thinking, or anything like that (although medical research now shows that laughter, positive speech and a good attitude do actually affect our physical and mental health). I’m asking you to believe the Bible -- something most Christians claim to do already.

Let’s look at a couple more scriptures which back up the fact that speaking is a powerful force.

Psalm 89:4 in the New Living Translation says, I will establish your descendants as kings forever; they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.
God was speaking to David, of his descendants down to Jesus, and then on to us. (Yes, us. Jesus said He gave to us, His disciples and followers, through the Holy Spirit within us, all that He has!) We are kings and priests in this world, and Ecclesiastes 8:4 says, “For the word of a king is authority and power and who can say to him, What are you doing?” (Amp.)

Our authority is in our voice, sending forth the angels who minister every Word of God, even when that word is spoken by us, His agents.

The Apostle Paul spoke of getting ready for battle by putting on God’s armor. The battle he was speaking of is mostly a battle of thoughts and words. Fear is believing Satan and believing that Satan is more powerful than our Father.

Believing God is faith. God says to choose; He’s not going to make anyone do anything. He gives us free choice and says Choose Life. Our battle is a battle for faith. Paul reached victory, saying, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Tim. 4:7, Amp.) Most of this “armor” is defensive armor, but we are given one very important offensive weapon: the Word of God:

And take the... sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God...  (Eph. 6:17 ESV)

We “take” something by hearing it, believing it, and then speaking it. Often if you are having trouble with the believing part, simply hearing your own words speaking the truth for a few days will cause the faith to grow in your heart. Speak it... it works.

More scriptures on the power of words:

... and if you separate the precious from the vile, you shall be My mouthpiece. (Jer. 15:19 Amp)

I believe the “vile” God speaks of here is anything negative or hurtful or critical or doubting; anything not of God, in other words. Remember that God is only good and faithful and loving.
Is not My word like fire says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks in pieces the
    Rock [of stubborn resistance]?
    (Jer. 23:29 Amp.)
That particular “rock” is one of many in a wall built up by believing Satan’s lies. In the Hebrew it is translated “lofty; a craggy rock; a fortress, stronghold”. Think of it as wall of bad attitudes; attitudes that disagree with what God’s word says, such as being angry and not forgiving or putting yourself first instead of giving someone else their way. God says to give and it will be given to you. The way you see it, if you give, you have nothing left! This is a negative mindset built up by believing anything that goes against what God says -- which is faith.

You knock down those walls by speaking God’s word (such as “It’s better to give than to receive. My reward comes from God because He is my source. I’m not selfish. I’m a giving, loving child of God.”) It takes awhile to knock down all those bricks, but once that wall is demolished, it’s nothing but green pasture.
... but no human being can tame the tongue... From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. (James 3:8, 10 ESV)

And since God’s word tells us right here we can’t really help what we say, even if we try really, really hard (don’t get into works -- stay in free grace!) our only hope is to ask God for help. I ask God, as King David did, to guard my words every day, that I speak only words and think only thoughts that please Him. It’s a process.
If I had said, “I will speak thus,” I would have betrayed the generation of your children. (Ps. 73:15)
Even the Psalmist knew the importance of his words and thanked God that he didn’t speak out negatively, bringing down a curse on his people and himself. Start listening to yourself. A good gauge is to remember God and how He speaks. He never doubts that every word He utters will come to pass, so He says it quietly, certain of His words hitting their mark. And He is only good. So speak as Your Father, good words, positive, for the building up and not for the tearing down, of others, yourself, and the body of Christ.

Finally, remember that we win.

Don’t get discouraged or weary. Stay the course. The only way for a Christian to lose is if he or she gives up. We have God living inside of us, and He never loses. Satan loses, as Revelation 12:11 says, “And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony..." (Amp) We win. It’s a great day! So let your testimony reflect God’s word.

Start now, “Today is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it!"
